How to Convert TAR.GZ to ZIP: TGZ, TAR and GZ Archives Repacked Into a ZIP That Opens Anywhere

A source release, a hosting backup, a packed package, a folder of rotated logs: they all arrive with the same awkward ending, and whoever is waiting on the other side wants a ZIP. This guide shows how to turn tar.gz to zip, tgz to zip, tar to zip and gz to zip for free, how to look inside the archive first, how to merge several into one ZIP, and — just as important — exactly what does not come across.

Drop a tarball, see what is inside, and download a ZIP named after it. Several archives become one ZIP with a folder for each.

1. TAR, GZ and TAR.GZ: Why Convert TAR to ZIP?

The three endings look like one family, but each does a different job.

TAR bundles

A .tar file strings many files and folders together into one, with no compression at all. The format is documented in the GNU tar manual. Converting tar to zip keeps the folder layout and, with Deflate on, usually makes the result smaller.

GZ compresses

GZIP, defined in RFC 1952, squeezes exactly one file. A .tar.gz or .tgz is a TAR bundle that was then gzipped, which is why it can hold a whole folder tree while a plain .gz cannot.

That answers the common puzzle, why is my .gz file only one file? Because GZIP only ever wraps a single file. When you convert gz to zip here, a .gz that is really a tarball is unpacked into all of its files, and a plain .gz becomes one file inside the ZIP, named after the archive without the .gz ending: access.log.gz gives you access.log.

The reason to convert at all is reach: ZIP is what everyday file managers, clients and web forms expect.

2. How to Convert TAR.GZ to ZIP in Three Steps

Here is how to convert tar.gz to zip with the tool at the top of this page. No account, and your original is left as it was.

  1. Add the archive. Drop a .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar, .gz or .zip onto the panel, or pick several at once. Each recognised archive appears as a card with its type, entry count and a Name / Size table of up to the first 300 entries.
  2. Check the options. Compression defaults to Deflate. The box that puts each archive’s files in a folder named after it is on by default.
  3. Create and download. Press Create ZIP. A note lists what happened to each file, for example that a TAR.GZ was repacked with a given number of files, and the download is named after your input, so backup.tar.gz becomes backup.zip. Several inputs download as archive.zip.

The preview in step one doubles as the answer to how to view contents of tar.gz without extracting: drop the file in, read the table, and only press the button if it is the archive you thought it was.

3. Windows Can’t Open It? TGZ to ZIP on Any System

“Windows can’t open tar.gz file” is a common complaint, especially on older Windows versions and locked-down work machines, and the usual advice is to learn a command line. If you just want a file you can double-click, converting is quicker. That is the practical answer to both how to open tar.gz file on windows and how to convert tar.gz to zip on windows: open this page, drop the tarball in, and the ZIP it hands back opens in File Explorer like any other.

The same page covers tgz to zip on mac without terminal, for anyone who would rather not type tar and zip commands, and tar.gz to zip on chromebook. Even where your own system can open a tarball, the person you are sending it to may not, and a ZIP removes that question. The steps are the same everywhere.

4. GZ to ZIP for Releases, Backups, Packages and Logs

These are the situations that bring most people here.

  • Convert GitHub tar.gz release to ZIP: Drop the downloaded source tarball in. Its folder structure is kept.
  • Convert cPanel backup tar.gz to ZIP: The files and database dump come across intact, ready to hand over or re-upload. Server permissions and owners do not, so the new host may need them set again (see section 6).
  • Convert WordPress backup tar.gz to ZIP: Many migration plugins and hosts ask for a ZIP; convert the backup here and import the result.
  • Convert npm tgz package to ZIP: Drop the packed .tgz in; its contents, usually a single package folder, appear in the preview first.
  • Logs. For a log file .gz to zip, add every rotated log at once. Each one becomes its own file, and the whole set goes to support as a single ZIP.
  • Picky upload forms. If an upload form only accepts zip, convert the tarball here, or drop in loose files and get a ZIP of them instead.

Hit a wall with a tar.gz to zip file too large online converter? We set no file-size cap and charge nothing. A very large backup can take a while, and an exceptionally large one may be too big to repack in one pass; convert its parts separately.

5. Merging Archives, and Deflate vs Store

This is also a plain archive to zip converter and a way to convert to zip online more broadly. You can drop tarballs, existing ZIPs and ordinary files (a PDF, a photo) into one batch. Archives are unpacked and repacked; everything else is added as it is. That is the short answer to how to combine multiple files into one zip.

To merge multiple tar.gz into one zip, leave the folder option on. Each archive’s files land in their own folder named after it, so two backups that both contain an index.php do not collide.

Deflate compresses the files and suits code, text, logs and database dumps. Store packs them with no compression at all and is the fastest option, which is what people mean when they search zip files without compression store mode. Choose Store when the contents are already compressed, such as JPGs, MP4s or MP3s, because Deflate would gain almost nothing on them. If the files themselves are the bulk, shrink them first with the image compressor, PDF compressor or video compressor.

6. RAR, 7z and What Does Not Carry Over

Searches for a rar to zip converter or 7z to zip land on pages like this one, so here is the honest version. RAR and 7z use their own compression, which this tool does not decode. If you add one, it is placed inside the ZIP untouched and the note says so; its contents are not converted. To get those contents into a ZIP, first unpack the archive with a desktop archive utility that supports RAR or 7z, then drop the unpacked files here. No tool on this site unpacks them.

What a ZIP will not keep from a TAR. Unix permissions, file owners and symbolic links are not carried into the ZIP, and empty folders are dropped because only files are repacked. Password-protected ZIP entries cannot be opened, and the output ZIP has no password of its own. Formats such as .bz2, .xz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz, .zst, .cab, .iso and .dmg are not supported.

Going the other way? To turn a ZIP into TAR or TAR.GZ, use the archive converter. To pull files out as separate downloads rather than a new ZIP, use extract archive, and to build an archive in a chosen format from scratch, use create archive. Files need tidier names before zipping? Run them through the file renamer first, because this tool keeps names as they are.

8. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I convert a tar.gz file to zip for free?

Drop the .tar.gz onto the tool above, check the preview of its contents, and press Create ZIP. The download is named after your file, so project.tar.gz becomes project.zip.

Is converting tgz to zip different from tar.gz to zip?

No. A .tgz is simply a shorter name for a gzipped TAR, the same thing as .tar.gz. Both are unpacked and repacked the same way, with the folder structure kept.

Why does my .gz file turn into only one file?

Because GZIP compresses a single file, not a folder. A plain .gz becomes one file in the ZIP, named after the archive without the .gz ending. Only a .tar.gz or .tgz, which is a TAR bundle inside the GZIP, holds many files and folders.

Can it convert RAR or 7z to ZIP?

Not their contents. RAR and 7z files are added to the ZIP unchanged, and the result note tells you so. Unpack them first with a desktop archive utility, then add the unpacked files here.

Will file permissions and empty folders be kept?

No. Unix permissions, owners and symbolic links from a TAR are not carried into the ZIP, and empty folders are dropped because only files are repacked. If you are moving a hosting backup, expect to reset permissions on the new server.

Can I combine several archives and files into one ZIP?

Yes. Add tarballs, ZIPs and ordinary files in one go. With the folder option on, each archive goes into its own folder named after it, so identically named files never overwrite each other. The combined download is called archive.zip.

Should I choose Deflate or Store?

Deflate compresses the files and is the better default for code, text, logs and database dumps. Store adds no compression and is the fastest choice, which makes sense when the contents are already compressed photos, video or audio.

Is it safe to convert a client backup here?

Your files are never stored on our servers, nothing is retained after your session, and nothing is used for training. Password-protected ZIPs cannot be opened, and the ZIP you download carries no password, so keep it somewhere appropriate.
